Coddling or Kegan? Why knowing which side of the bridge you are on means all the world.

How do we balance teaching with coddling? When do we cross that line, and how do we avoid crossing it? Do you ever feel caught in a debate and can’t decide how to move? From a student perspective, I can see how you expect to learn comes from how you have always learned. From a teaching perspective, I can see how students learn comes from how they have always learned. But those two assumptions aren’t typically the same assumption. Students now aren’t learning like they did before, so we as teachers need to begin to teach in ways we have never taught before.

Have you ever found yourself in a power struggle with a student, a classmate, a coworker, or a friend? I want to do what I want to do…, but the other person wants to do it their way. Both ways can be entirely correct, but from each vantage point, the other person is wrong. As a struggling perfectionist…letting things go is not my strong suit. Letting others be in control is not my strong suit. Having an innate need to control the situation and orchestrate the perfect ending is my default setting.
